Miscommunication does not arrive with its own budget code.

It is recorded as a quality issue, a delayed order, overtime, a customer complaint, a safety near miss, or a resignation. Because the cost is spread across several reports, companies may not recognize the common pattern.

## **Where to look**

Review the parts of the operation where instructions and handoffs matter most:

- Rework, scrap, and repeated quality errors.
- Safety incidents and near misses with an unclear communication component.
- Time supervisors spend repeating instructions or finding an informal translator.
- Onboarding time for employees with different proficiency levels.
- Turnover on teams where employees have limited access to training or advancement.
- Customer or patient interactions that require another language.
- Delays caused by forms, procedures, or videos that are not accessible to the audience.

No single item proves a language problem. The goal is to identify a pattern worth investigating.

## **Conduct a language needs analysis**

Talk with both supervisors and employees. Map the roles, shifts, locations, languages, and recurring conversations. Review what has already been translated and whether employees can actually use it. Determine which skills require training and which situations need professional translation or interpretation.

Then prioritize. A company may begin with one safety-critical department, one onboarding process, or one group of supervisors.

## **Measure the cost of doing nothing**

Leadership will naturally compare a program's price with other priorities. Include the cost of the current workaround: supervisor time, rework, avoidable delays, or the loss of an experienced employee.

Workplace Languages can help companies turn an invisible communication issue into a specific, measurable plan.
