The best language test is not the one with the longest report or the most difficult questions. It is the one that measures the skills required for a specific decision.

The best language test is not the one with the longest report or the most difficult questions. It is the one that measures the skills required for a specific decision.

## **Begin with the role**

Write down what the employee will actually do in the language. Will the person speak with customers, understand safety instructions, read technical material, write reports, or lead meetings? Which tasks are essential and which are occasional?

This determines whether the company needs speaking, listening, reading, writing, or all four.

## **Decide how the result will be used**

A placement test for a class serves a different purpose from a high-stakes test used for hiring or bilingual pay. For employment decisions, the company should look for a validated, consistent assessment and a scoring framework that can be explained to candidates, employees, HR, and managers.

## **Compare the practical details**

Ask potential providers:

- Which skills and proficiency levels does the test measure?
- Is the assessment validated for its stated purpose?
- How are speaking and writing scored?
- What does the report mean in practical workplace terms?
- Is remote administration secure and accessible?
- How quickly are results available?
- What support is available for candidates and HR?
- Can the results guide training placement or curriculum?

## **Set the threshold before testing**

Do not choose a passing level after seeing who passed. Define the role requirement first and apply the same standard to comparable candidates or employees.

The process should be job-related, transparent, and reviewed with qualified HR or legal counsel when it affects employment decisions.

Workplace Languages can help your organization select a test and translate the result into a clear next step.
