Language testing can support hiring, training, promotion, bilingual pay, and workforce planning. It is most useful when the company begins with a clear decision in mind.

## **Four different skills**

A comprehensive assessment may evaluate:

- Speaking: live communication and the ability to express ideas clearly.
- Listening: understanding spoken language, including speed, accent, and workplace context.
- Reading: understanding written information from messages to technical documents.
- Writing: producing accurate communication appropriate to the role.

An employee may perform at a different level in each skill. That is normal and one reason a single informal conversation does not provide a complete picture.

## **Common workplace uses**

Employers use testing for:

- Pre-hire screening in roles where language is job-related.
- Placement before a workplace ESL or other language class.
- Baseline and post-training measurement.
- Qualification for bilingual pay or a language-dependent role.
- Internal mobility and development planning.

## **What a reliable process looks like**

The test should match the skills required by the job, use a consistent scoring standard, and produce results the company can explain. Candidates and employees should know why the assessment is being used and how the information will affect the decision.

Testing should never be data collection with no next step. Use the result to place the learner, confirm readiness, define a training goal, or make a consistent employment decision.

Workplace Languages can help identify the right assessment and connect the results to a practical training or workforce plan.
